Fireworks on the BayWhat is "Flash Catalyst CS5” and why do I care?
Tuesday May 18th, 6:30 PM San Francisco

Flash Catalyst CS5 allows you to add rich interactivity and animation to your FW/PS, or AI designs without writing code. Flash Catalyst developer Adam Cath will show you how to turn a static mockup into a living, breathing user experience which can flow directly into production – no slicing or rebuilding necessary.
Adam has been working on Flash Catalyst since the project began in 2007, after working on the Flex SDK and AIR. On the side, he is an amateur graphic designer and runs a university course shopping website (mochacourses.com). He also plays the trumpet in SF salsa band Conjunto Picante (myspace.com/conjuntopicante).

Since we have an Adobe Speaker, we will be giving away a copy of Adobe CS5 Web Premium as well as 2 copies of VMware Fusion 3! Also many other prizes available but you must be present to win!

For online attendee's this meeting will be broadcasted live via connect here- http://bit.ly/fotbfc

Adobe Fireworks CS5Aside from the major performance, stability, install and memory enhancements here is my little list of most liked Adobe Fireworks CS5 items (new or updated).
  1. FXG 2.0 Specification Update: It may be an update, but imagine for a moment every Adobe application offerring full round-tripping capability (like Illustrator CS5 offers) with this graphic format. Sure could eliminate the Import/Export file format juggling! Fireworks CS5 FXG  export fidelity does a great job better and faster than in previous years of export to .psd or .eps.
  2. New Templates Workflow: Simplify document preset management according to the specification standard that best depicts your workflow. Use the pre-fab available templates or add to the list with your own, it's sure to speed up design implementation.
  3. Property Inspector Workflow Enhancements: This one actually contains a handful of useful additions (enhancements) into one group - found under the Property Inspector 'hood' workflow. Items like Lock Constraint Proportions, direct Stroke Options accessibility, the new Compound Shapes tools workflow and more.
  4. Text Engine Updates: Tons of little enhancements give the Fireworks CS5 Text Engine a spark of power over previous versions. Be sure to check out the list below.
  5. Layers, Pages, States Panel Improvements: Another group of enhancements I 'bulked' into a category mainly because they are tied into the Layers, Pages and States workflow. The best one here for me would be the Export Options Page/State (Selected, All, Current) available options.

A simple step and repeat process for an endless array of custom shapes.

Step and Repeat Transformation
  • Start with a Custom Shape (Preset) Outline
  • Ctrl + Alt + T (Mac: Command + Option + T) to transform
  • Rotate, Scale or Adjust the center Reference Anchor and commit transformation
  • Ctrl + Shift + Alt + T (Mac: Command + Shift + Option + T) repeatedly for an array of repetitious overlays.
The normal use case for this step and repeat transformation is for creating symetrical or evenly spaced elements within the same vector object (or bitmaps) as demoed here at Planet Photoshop. But when duplicated and positioned you can create some pretty exotic shapes. See exaples below.

Exotic examples:

Give the process a go and have fun!
